Sorry for the lack of updates today everyone...It's been slower than syrup today in hip hop. No new videos, songs, news...nothing. notta. zip. zero. But all is not lost...Before I pass out tonight, I'll be hitting y'all with the first part of a crazy new series I'll be starting here at The Undaground. Here's the downlow...
Back in '98, the now defunct "Ego Trip" Magazine released a comprehensive list of the 40 greatest hip hop tracks of every year from 1988 to 1998. It's widely considered by many as one of the most thorough, comprehensive, and accurate hip hop lists ever created. Okay, I may be exaggerating a little, but regardless it's pretty fuckin' solid. Although I had seen the list years posted online years ago, and used it as a guide to downloaded a few gems that I had never heard, I never dreamed of getting my hands on the entire collection. But I've learned two important things over the years...never underestimate the power of the internet and more importantly the ability of people with no lives. So with that said, a few months ago, I happened to talk to a guy who knew a guy who talked to a guy from Europe that actually took the time to download, buy, steal and do whatever had to be done to compile the ENTIRE Ego Trip list. He not only did it, but put it on a few DVD-R's and sent it out to a bunch of people, and long story short...I got my hands on the whole thing. Now don't get it twisted... I'm not talking about just the radio hits, billboard smashes, + R&B collabos...I'm talking the best, pure, unadultered, hip hop from every year since it's creation. So essentially every week starting now, I'm going to hit y'all with 2 years at a time starting at '88 until we reach '98. It's going to be a great way to get schooled on some old school, take a trip down memory lane, discover classic cuts that you may have never heard, and most importantly, gather a pretty comprehensive collection of hip hop's greatest songs of all time.
Stay tuned for more info + the first two years of cuts '88 & '89 coming very soon. One.
