It's been rumored for weeks that Cam'ron is preparing to make his return to the game after mysteriously disappearing from the spotlight for almost the entire year. After sparking feuds with Jay-Z & 50 Cent late last year, Killa abruptly decided to take an extended vacation from the scene and reportedly wouldn't speak to even his fellow Dipset members. Which isn't a surprise considering the recent shake-up within the foundation of the Dip's, particularly between the original two members and life-long friends Cam & Jim Jones. Since hitting big with his smash single "We Fly High", Jones has repeatedly talked greasy about Killa on records & interviews. Jones has said that he hasn't spoken to Cam since the We Fly High video shoot, buried the hatchet with 50 Cent on BET's Rap City, and signed a multi-million dollar solo deal with Columbia Records. It's left many people asking questions about the groups status, and although Jones claims they are still together and it's just business, we have yet to hear anything addressed by Killa. Until now. Just today all the rumors have finally been confirmed with the release of this video on the 'net. As you saw at the end of the clip, the new mixtape is called "Public Enemy #1" and will be released on November 7th as a free double disc. You know damn well that all our questions will be answered on wax which will surely cause some controversy.
Now I've been a long-time follower of Cam and The Dipset...and we're talking far before Jones and Juelz were household names. I'm talking when Jones was just a hypeman and Juelz was a young dude spitting verses here and there and no-one knew who the fuck they were. It's safe to say I've watched these guy's on the come-up from early on, and it makes me disgusted to see Jones talking sideways about the guy who put them all on. They came in the game on Cam's back and he gave them every opportunity to benefit. He put them in videos, gave them features on hit singles, and managed to get their debut album distributed through Roc-A-Fella. their unique style, and swagger reinvigorated NY hip-hop and progressed into a full-on movement establishing not only Juelz & Jones, but a slew of other mc's like Hell Rell and JR Writer. One hand washed the other and both hands washed the face.
It must have been a great day when Cam recognized that both Juelz & Jones were popular enough to put out solo albums and stand on their own two. Everything was going well for the group until Jones hit it big when his "We Fly High" joint became a crossover smash and he reached a level of success where he realized he didn't need Cam anymore. It's really unfortunate to see that type of shit happen to a group that appeared to have a rock solid foundation. You'll notice that Juelz has remained humble and quiet throughout this whole situation because he clearly respects what Cam has done for his career. All in all, I'm also interested to see how this will play out over time....Can Jimmy create another song that reaches even close to the success of We Fly High? Will Cam come back with a vengeance and air out Jimmy? Most importantly what is the ultimate fate of The Dipset? I'm sure we'll get some answers on November 7th...But for now I'll leave you with a quote from Jay-Z in this month's issue of XXL...
"You know your friends when they don’t need you no more.” Y’all see if y’all really like each other. When people don’t need you, you never know. ’Cause if they need you, they’re going to be quiet about the situation. [Whispers] “I hate this nigga! This nigga wear pink one more time…” It’s like, okay, now let’s see if you can deal with success. That’s just how life is."
Oh and as an added bonus...here's one of my favorite videos of all time featuring the Dipset during happier times in London circa '03. Enjoy...
