Oh shit...Where my old school heads at? I just got my hands on some new tracks from the upcoming "Operation: Take Back Hip-Hop" LP from Marley Marl & Craig G. Both artists were members of the legendary Juice Crew in the 80's and are hoping to channel the same chemistry from their '88 classic "Droppin' Science" more than twenty years later. They are hoping to make a statement and attempt to bring back the quality of hip-hop from yesteryear. In a recent interview Craig said “Instead of me wasting years complaining along with journalists and everyone else, Marley and I are trying to make change through music.” He added “This is my passion, this is what raised me, and I refuse to stand by and watch my culture get destroyed any further with poor quality music.”
In addition to the new album, a full-length movie is in the works titled "The Vapors" which will be a biopic highlighting the Juice Crew's story and rise to success in the late 80's. According to Rolling Stone, Cuba Gooding Jr. has been cast as Marley Marl, David Banner as Biz Markie, Clifton Powell as Mr. Magic and Keke Palmer as Roxanne Shante with others to be named soon. The film will be executive produced by Big Daddy Kane & Marley Marl.
Although Marley Marl suffered a heart attack last June right as they were set to begin work on the album, he has made a full recovery and is handling the bulk of the production on the album. "Operation: Take Back Hip-Hop" will also feature guest appearances from the likes of: KRS-One, Talib Kweli, Sadat X, Cormega, & Rakaa of Dilated Peoples. The album will be hitting stores on June 17th and you can check out three new tracks from the project + the final track listing below...
