In today's edition of "Digital Crate Diggin" I've decided to dip into the archives and hit y'all with a dose of the left coast in the form of the 1995 debut album "Dogg Food" from Tha Dogg Pound. The group was put together by Snoop Doggy Dogg and the album officially introduced Kurupt + Daz Dillinger to the world. Although it was a debut album, "Dogg Food" was widely anticipated after Death Row's recent string of successful albums which included "The Chronic" + "Doggystyle". However, the album almost wasn't released after a bunch of protests by Time Warner shareholders and the public because of the "controversial" lyrics on the album. Once it was finally released on October 31st, 1995 it debuted on the top of the Billboard charts selling over 250k in it's first week.
"Dogg Food" went on to sell 2X platinum with well over 2 million copies sold worldwide to date. The album spawned two modest hit singles in "Lets Play House" + "New York, New York", but is acclaimed more as a classic G-Funk album than a commercial success. The production on the LP was largely handled by Daz + DJ Pooh, but was executive produced by Dr. Dre + Soopafly and also features guest spots from: Nate Dogg, Lady Of Rage, Tray Dee, Dr. Dre, and of course Snoop Dogg. If you are unlucky enough to have been sleeping on this album for over a decade, do yourself a favor and wake the fuck up to this classic westcoast masterpiece packed with enough vintage g-funk to keep your head nodding for 70+ minutes.
