In this week's installment of Digital Crate Diggin', I'll be hittin y'all with some compilations from one of hip-hop's most underrated production teams: "Cookin' Soul". The group is made up of a trio of Producers/DJs comin' straight outta...Spain. Yup, I didn't mis-type. Although many don't consider Spain to be any kind of place for a hip-hop scene, Big Size, Milton, and Zock beg to differ. Matter of fact, If you didn't know any better, the trio from Valencia sound like they are born-and-bred New Yorkers. There's absolutely nothing about their soul drenched, loop heavy production style that would suggest otherwise. In the early 2000's, Cookin' Soul began posting their original beats over classic hip-hop vocals on the internet, and sure enough, they built up quite the reputation for putting together some ill ass compositions. By 2005, they put together enough blends to compile two mixtapes appropriately titled "The Cookin' Soul Remixes Volume 1 & 2" which they offered as free downloads all over the 'net. Soon thereafter, American artists began tracking down the group begging for original beats featuring their signature soul samples. One of the first crews to track them down were The Dipset. To date they've produced tracks for JR Writer, 40 Cal, & Max B as well as Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Currency, Bezel, and Ali Vegas to name a few. The crew continues to grind and put together crazy mixtapes including most recently "NY State Of Mind" featuring original blends over Jay-Z, Nas, + 50 Cent classics, as well as full remix albums of AZ's "A.W.O.L" + Jay's "American Gangster". Considering that these guys are still relatively unknown, yet continually produce such high quality, classic soul inspired beats I decided that it would be appropriate to share the wealth and let y'all in on what Cookin' Soul is all about.
