As promised...here's the next installment of The Digital Undaground's series highlighting Rap's Best Kept Secrets. Last month I introduced the series by getting y'all familiar with Pittsburgh's young up-and-comer Wiz Khalifa. This time around we're going to shift our focus to another talented brother by the name of Wale (pronounced Wah-lay). Like Khalifa, Wale has been grinding endlessly trying to get noticed in an area that is not well known for it's hip hop scene. The emcee was born and raised in the Washington D.C. area, and has been working on putting both himself and DC on the map for over 4 years. Just recently Wale has begun to really spread his wings and is slowly but surely gaining exposure on a national level. His style is an energetic hybrid of traditional east coast hip-hop blended with the up-tempo funky sound of D.C.'s wildly popular go-go music. After crafting a slew of catchy hits that were put into heavy rotation on radio stations throughout Maryland, DC, & Virginia in 2006, people began taking notice. One of those people was famed DJ/Producer Mark Ronson who immediately signed Wale to his label Allido. In July, Wale released his second mixtape "100 Miles & Running" which featured production from Ronson and guest appearances from: Daniel Merriweather, Amy Winehouse, and Lily Allen.
Since then, the 23 year old emcee has been recording, touring, and promoting his music non-stop worldwide, and has caught the ears of many bloggers, magazines, and hipsters who consider Wale to be not only a breath of fresh air, but someone to watch out for in 2008. So far this year he's appeared in: Fader, The NY Times, Entertainment Weekly, The Source, Rolling Stone, Vibe, AllHipHop, Boston Globe and URB magazine. He has also had his music featured on HBO's Entourage and perhaps his biggest break occurred on MTV's Video Music Awards where he and Ronson performed in between commercial breaks in front of a national television audience. As you can tell by now, dude is making some serious power moves and in my eyes is only one hit away from becoming a household name. Although I've been up on his music since hearing some buzz this past spring, it's clear that his buzz is about to reach a whole 'nother level in 2008. Most recently, Wale teamed up with Nike and recorded a track called "Nike Boots" to commemorate the anniversary of the Nike brand. The track has not only been featured in Nike's new commercials, but since being released a few weeks back, it has already been named "Single of the Week" on iTunes and an official remix has been released by Green Lantern featuring Lil' Wayne & Dipset members Max B & Freeky Zekey. So what's up next for Wale? Well, he's currently in talks with a few major labels looking to sign him and he hopes to announce a deal within the first few months of the new year and have an album on shelves by the end 0f '08. With the young emcee's stock rising higher by the day, it's only a matter of time til Wale and his unique sound take the world by storm and inject some new life into hip-hop and the entire game.
