In the past day or so I caught a few sites throwing up the video for a relatively unknown group called U-N-I's latest single "Beautiful Day". Although I never even heard of the crew before...best believe I do now. The track and video is a throwback to that old school feel good hip-hop that brings you back to a lazy summer day no matter how fuckin cold it is outside. It was a welcomed change to all the grimey shit I usually listen to during these winter months and I did a little digging and found the group's debut album "Fried Chicken & Watermelon".
U-N-I is made up of two emcees: Thurzday & Y-O who are both West Coast natives reppin' Inglewood, California. They, like most new acts I've been feeling have an original style that can't easily be defined or put into a clear-cut category. The self admitted kick addicts are currently unsigned but have been catching some press and praise from the likes of: URB Magazine, SLAM magazine, ?uestlove & Okayplayer, Rapmullet and more. After only one full spin, this street album definitely gets the big co-sign from JV and I'm definitely gonna be keepin an eye out for these dudes. The album flows nicely from front to back with both emcees delivering slick and funny rhymes over some hot ass production. Like the title of the album suggests, they serve up a pretty diverse dish catering to a variety of different tastes and styles, but neither emcee ever sounds out of place whether discussing kicks, fat girls, video games, or lap dances. All and all...U-N-I is definitely doing their thing and are breaking out of the generic west coast mold while still creating music that's raw and true to hip-hop.
